On the shelf:
Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and the New Realities of Girl World--Rosalind Wiseman
I'm still making my way through this book, but I'd happily--and strongly--recommend it based on what I've read so far. Wiseman covers a lot of ground and provides context for how girls develop and how it intersects with this new, more complex Girl World. She also offers suggestions along the way for connecting with girls in a way that is relational and can be productive.

So Sexy, So Soon: The New Sexualized Childhood and What Parents Can Do to Protect Their Kids--Diane E. Levin
Cinderella Ate My Daughter: Dispatches from the Front Lines of the New Girlie-Girl Culture--Peggy Orenstein
Our culture has shifted dramatically toward an emphasis on appearance--especially for girls and women. Both of these books look at this issue of beauty and a sexualized childhood and the increased potential for girls' vulnerability to concerns such as eating disorders, negative body image, depression, and risky or premature sexual behavior. Both authors set out to explore these issues, provide awareness and recognition, and help adults counterbalance these messages from TV/movies, music, the internet, and the clothing rack.

This book is worth the read for anyone who works with girls in any capacity.
